Yes, MiteGuard holds the official New Zealand Made certification, meaning the products are manufactured locally from natural cotton fabric rather than imported.

- Where is your SIZE GUIDE?
-
The size guide for each product type is on the the product page just above where you select the size you would like.
- I have a limited budget – what allergy bedding should I buy first?
-
For the best protection on bedding, we recommend pillows/pillowcases to start, followed by mattress covers as the next most important. This is because the mattress and pillows are the biggest stores or source of dust-mites. Your duvet may be able to be washed and/or aired in the sun to help get rid of allergen particles and mites.
Remember that your purchase will be for quality items with a 5 year manufacturers guarantee.
- What else can I do to reduce Dust Mite allergen in our home?

- Can I go somewhere to pick up my MiteGuard® order?
-
MiteGuard® is sold online only, through our website, Allergy NZ, Asthma NZ, Allergy Pharmacy and The Sleep Store.
We can arrange for delivery to your home, NZ Post Boxes and delivery points, and also to some Asthma agencies in the South Island - please just contact us
- Are you the same as the Mite Guard branded products sold in Australia?
-
No, we are not! Those products are made by a different company using different, non-cotton materials. Our MiteGuard® products are all made here in New Zealand and are sold under the brand name AllerProtect in Australia.
- Why are the King Single and Double Duvet sizes the same?
-
Duvets being made in Australia and NZ under the size of King Single or Double now tend to be the same size of 2100 mm L x 1800 mm W. Most double and King single duvet covers will have this size. Our older style Double duvet covers were a little shorter and wider to match some of the other sizes in the market and were slightly more expensive. If you have a Double duvet that is a different size to the newer standard 2100 x 1800 please feel free to get in touch. View our custom made duvet covers or contact us.
- Should I wash my MiteGuard® products before use?
-
Yes, we recommend washing your MiteGuard® covers before their first use. For ongoing care, aim to wash them every three months. To keep allergen levels low between washes, you can also lightly vacuum the covers or wipe them down with a damp cloth.
- Should I use normal linen over the top of my MiteGuard covers?
-
Yes – Your MiteGuard protector goes over the mattress/pillow or duvet to stop the transfer of any dust mites and their allergen particles that are already stored in those items from getting to the sleeper. Your Miteguard® covers should be washed every 3 months.
However, dust mites occur naturally in our environment, so new mites can be carried onto your bedding from pets, soft toys, and clothes. Using normal linen sheets & pillowcases over the top of the Miteguard protective covers, offers an extra layer of comfort and these can be washed weekly to get rid of any new dust mites as well as skin cells, sweat and body oils. This makes a clean, healthy, and comfortable environment for sleeping.
The number of dust mites introduced on a weekly basis would be tiny compared to established populations in mattress pillows or duvets, so this is another great way to minimize your exposure.
- Are MiteGuard® covers waterproof?
-
No, MiteGuard® covers are made from 100% natural cotton and are breathable, not waterproof. They are specially designed to block dust mite allergen particles at a microscopic level, which is a very different technology to waterproofing. If you need liquid protection (for example for a young child or someone with incontinence needs), we recommend using a separate waterproof mattress protector underneath your MiteGuard® cover.
- Do I have to hot wash my bed linen?
-
Dust mites cannot survive if washed in water at 55°C or higher. Hot washing linen weekly (sheets and decorative duvet covers and pillowcases) will kill any new dust mites you have carried into your bed linen. Your Miteguard® covers only need to be washed every 3 months.
Alternatives to hot washing:
If hot washing is not an option use a cold wash, then either dry them in a dryer (the dryer heat will work if over 55°C), or line dry your items in the sun for at least an hour. The UV light from the sun will kill dust mites and the washing will wash away the allergen particles.
- How often should I wash my MiteGuard® covers?
-
Your MiteGuard® covers should be washed about every 3 months. You can also vacuum or wipe them down with a damp cloth in between washes to keep allergen levels down.
- Can I use a MiteGuard® travel sheet instead of a mattress cover?
-
Travel sheets are a great option for a temporary situation. They work well for sleepovers, school camps, campervans, holidays or staying in a whanau member’s 20-year-old spare bed for example, but neither flat nor fitted travel sheets fully enclose the mattress.
Why is that an issue?Allergen particles are tiny (10 or more microns in size – about the same size as a pollen grain). Movement on the mattress can cause allergen particles/dust mites to escape into the air and be breathed in, whereas a mattress cover completely encloses the mattress to provide better protection.
Flat travel sheets can act as a protection layer over the mattress or between the sleeper and the duvet
instead of a using MiteGuard® duvet cover, but again they do not enclose the duvet completely, so we recommend these as a temporary solution. - Can I use an Electric blanket with my MiteGuard® ?
-
You can use an electric blanket with your MiteGuard® mattress cover. Here are 3 easy steps:
1. It is best to put the mattress cover over the mattress, then put the electric blanket on top.
2. If your electric blanket is washable – wash it first to get rid of old allergen particles- follow all care instructions. If it is not washable, air it first.
3. To reduce the risk of allergen in your electric blanket you can turn your electric blanket on high for an hour each week – this will kill any dust mites living in the blanket.
- What size cushion cover should I use over my cushion?
-
A smaller cushion cover will give your cushion a plumper look - so if your cushion is 45 x 45cm choose a cover that is about 40 x 40cm. If you like a medium cushion or to be able to flatten it – just use a cushion cover the same size or slightly larger.
- Can I wash my AllerProtect Pillow/Cushion?
-
Yes – AllerProtect/MiteGuard® Pillows and cushions can be hot or cold washed, then dried on an outside clothesline or in a dryer.
Care labels are in the products and for full washing instructions use these links:
Please note: AllerProtect filled pillows & cushions are not currently in production - but you can use MiteGuard pillow covers and cushion covers on regular cushions and pillows instead.
